Most students lose marks because their portfolio does not clearly show design thinking. Research, specification, development, testing and evaluation must connect together, not sit as separate pages.
A strong specification is clear, measurable and linked to the user. It should include function, materials, ergonomics, size, safety, sustainability, manufacturing and testing criteria.
CAD is not the only thing that matters, but strong CAD development can improve communication, refinement, technical accuracy and portfolio quality.
Testing should happen throughout the project, not only at the end. Strong portfolios include user feedback, prototype testing, material/process testing and evaluation against specification points.
The biggest mistake is collecting research but not using it. High-quality NEA work shows how research directly influences design decisions, specification points, CAD changes and prototype improvements.
Start by fixing the structure. Make sure every section has a clear purpose: research informs specifications, specifications guide development, testing improves the design, and evaluation proves performance.
